Project Summary

Previous research has shown that teaching others can facilitate effective learning. However, most recent AI-based learning support systems have been designed to teach learners, while approaches to supporting learning by teaching remain underexplored. In this study, we developed a self-directed learning application that incorporates three-way dialogue among a teaching AI, a learning AI, and a human learner, proposing a learning environment in which learners can learn by both teaching and being taught. Furthermore, we investigated how the personality and learning level of the learning AI affect learners’ learning experiences and derived design guidelines for creating a learning AI that learners prefer to teach.
